My dad and I built new mantles for the fireplaces in our house. The former mantles just looked like a shelf, and I wanted something that looked more substantial. We took 5/8ths maple plywood and made what basically amounts to a box that is anchored to the wall so that it looks like a solid beam. I picked out a nice rosewood stain for them and then put on a couple of coats of sealer. They turned out so well! I'm all atwitter!
And I got to spend some good quality time with my dad, who introduced me to a whole plethora of tools. I never would have been able to accomplish making these without his help, so I'm so grateful...I'll make him brownies.
