A friend of mine writes an awesome DnD based web comic called Order of the Stick.
The comic comes out a couple of times a week (for free) and then
periodically he compiles a story arc into a actual book (for purchase).
Many on the original books he printed are now out of stock, and while he
wanted to do a reprinting the cost to the publishers for a second run
was out of his price range (roughly $60,000).
So he turned to the Kickstarter website. As their website describes, “Kickstarter is the world’s largest funding platform for creative projects.” He had 30 days after the launch of his project to get pledges equaling or exceeding the amount he needed (roughly $60,000).
His project funded in less than 48 hours. That’s right. He had surpassed the $60,000 goal in under 2 days. And then it just exploded. With about 12 hours left until the thirty days is up the project has generated over $1.1 million dollars. Hell yeah!
I’m so damn proud of Rich I can hardly stand it.
Here’s a link to The Order of the Stick Reprint Drive.
And here’s a link to the Kickstarter Blog interview with Rich.
UPDATE:
Final numbers are in and the project raised $1,254,120.00! Mind utterly blown.
...and the media attention kicks into full gear. Story by The Washington Post. Story by Forbes.
