Today was to be another chapter in my adventure with my friend Sally in celebrating the small townishness of the area where we live...holiday style. A few months ago we basked in the glory that was our local county fair, and today we were to head to a nearby town for their annual Festival of Chimes and Lights.
I use the past tense here because we didn't end up going. Sally is sick. And it's harder to revel in small town holiday cheer by yourself.
So here's what we were going to do...
The plan was to get there around 4pm so we could find parking in the daylight. We would have enjoyed some free cookies and hot cider while watching the holiday pet parade, then maybe have gone for a hayride. Around 5:30 we would have headed down to the marina to view the lighted holiday ships as they set sail and gotten to vote on which one we liked best.
Some looking around in the downtown merchants' shops would have probably followed before we went to the town hall to join in the community sing-a-long, lighting of the Christmas tree, ringing of the chimes and to watch Santa and Mrs. Claus arrive (accompanied by the high school marching band. Sounds like a pretty good time.
Instead I busied myself with getting our Christmas cards ordered (they're adorable and feature our favorite canine), putting up lights up in the front windows as part of out light display, giving myself a holiday pedicure, learning how to do my hair like Quinn Fabray from Glee, and going to the home improvement store for some odds and ends. Not a bad way to spend an afternoon, but I still wish Sally had felt better (for multiple reasons).
